Having five rescue dogs of our own, it's safe to say we are a family of dog lovers, so seeing the millions of helpless strays in Mexico hit us hard. Inspired by Fly to Freedom Dog Rescue that brought us one of our dogs from Anguilla, we decided to transport Mexican street dogs and give them a fighting chance, just like Mara was given. Since transporting our first stray in 2021, our mission has been to rescue dogs from the streets of Mexico and give them a second chance at life with loving adopters in the U.S. We work with various rescues throughout Mexico including Love @ 2nd Sight in Guadalajara, Riviera Rescue in Cancun, and Amor Sin Raza in Mexico City. Despite hitting obstacles, facing criticism, experiencing heartbreak, and feeling overwhelmed by the impossible number of street dogs, we will never stop working to make a dent in that population and make the world a little better.
In Mexico, there are over 18,000,000 dogs living on the street. These dogs often fall victim to abandonment, cruetly, and disease to the point where their average lifespan is between one and three years of age. In the United States, dogs are treated as pets in need of love. In Mexico, dogs are treated as pests in need of extermination. Furthermore, Mexican street dogs do not have a voice. In 2023, 50% of the street dogs in the U.S. were rescued. That same year, 0.5% of street dogs in Mexico were rescued. We aim to advocate for the starved, abused, and neglected dogs in Mexico because they deserve to have a warm bed, a substantial meal, and a feeling of belonging just like their U.S. counterparts.
