One of our founders, Alana Conolly LOVES seeing, helping, and owning dogs. She wanted nothing more than to visit a rescue while we were vacationing in Mexico, because she missed our dogs at home. We planned a day to go, visit, and volunteer.
When we arrived at the rescue, Cachorrilandia, we noticed this sickly looking puppy, who was not as excited, who didn't seem to have enough effort to get up and try to get attention from the new people. The rescue owner simply said she was 'depressed' and 'sad', which absolutely broke our hearts.
We fell in love with this puppy, and even after we went back to the hotel, could not stop thinking about her. We could not adopt her ourselves, due to how many dogs we had at home, but another founder, Cheryl Conolly, posted online asking someone to adopt this baby... and the support was overwhelming and unexpected.
People began donating money and volunteering to take care of this puppy. We did not expect this support, but we ended up raising enough money to adopt, treat for any sickness, and transport Nakia to the US. We also ended up raising enough to donate to the rescue, to provide more resources to help the other dogs.
After Nakia was in her new home, healthy and loved, we realized that we needed to help more of the millions of street dogs in Mexico. Although there are dogs without homes in the US; American shelters are luxurious compared to the dirt floor, outdoor, and immense amount of dogs in shelters in Mexico. After understanding the costs and steps needed to transport dogs, we were inspired to start our own non-profit organization, flying dogs to the US, and giving them happier and healthier lives.

We knew that transporting a dog from one country to another was possible because of another similar rescue, Fly to Freedom. This transport rescue works with a dog rescue (AARF, Anguilla Animal Rescue) in Anguilla, an island in the Caribbean, to fly dogs to the US. The Conolly family enjoys visiting Anguilla, and learned about the Fly to Freedom program while visiting this rescue on one of their vacations years ago.
After going through the process to adopt our own dog, Mara, from Anguilla, we became quite familiar with the process of transporting, fostering, and adopting. We knew that if they could do it in Anguilla, we could make it happen in Mexico, where there are far more homeless dogs. We have also received advice from Fly to Freedom, which in turn has helped us immensely in our journey to creating our non-profit organization.
